AMI Seminar: Montessori Elementary Education 6-12

Elementary children are driven by their curious minds and imagination, have the abilities to develop their abstract thinking, and deepen their moral values and social competences. Their energy for exploring the world and the way it works is leading the growth.

This practical seminar is designed for supporting the professional development of primary and elementary educators and parents, who will dive deeper into the knowledge of personality development at the age of 6-12. You will receive valuable guidelines for the teacher’s approach and classroom activities that encourage love of learning.

Lecturer

Carla Foster is originally from California, but has lived many years in Norway. She graduated from UC Berkeley, California with bachelor’s degrees in Social Anthropology and Scandinavian Studies and a masters in Old Icelandic Literature and Norwegian Literature. She gained her AMI 3-6 diploma from the MMTO in London in 1984 and her AMI 6-12 diploma from Milwaukee in 1990 and has been working with elementary children since 1990. She has worked with children at levels 3-6, 6-9 and 9-12 in both private and public Montessori schools. She had her own class in

Norway for 12 years before joining the AMI Trainer of Trainers programme. In 2011 she became an AMI Director of Training for the Elementary level and has worked on courses in the US, Europe and India. Any spare time is spent doing various forms of dance.

 

 

Programme & Schedule

Day 1, 9:00am – 5:00pm

Elementary child  – What are the needs of elementary children, What are the leading human tendencies, What are the key characteristics of the development in age from 6 to 12 years old, How education can support development in response to these needs?

Reasoning mind  – How we are helping them to build for reasoning thinking to understand the elements of why “Is that true, Is that really true, Is it always true, Why, Why ‘not’, Is it partially true”; for logical and analytical thinking: “This has happens because…”; for planning.

Imagination – What is the fundamental change in human brain – becoming able to move information around, to create images and build images, Why first you need the establish understanding, basis and than you can go with predictions, How the facts are not enough, children need understanding.

Day 2, 9:00am – 5:00pm

Storytelling  – How storytelling is embedded as a learning strategy in the brain, Why the elementary age is the time to bring the cosmos to the children.

Poetry  – Why poetry is so important for the development of language skills and literacy, What are the techniques for writing poetry for elementary children.

Cursive writing – How we prepare the hand for handwriting, How to provide a lot of hand work for having the best handwriting, How the language is travelling in time and space.

The seminar will be held in English. Simultaneous translation into Bulgarian language via earphones will be provided.
